Level Measurement

How can we do manual level measurement by using the dipstick, lead lines, and portable electronic?

What is a dipstick and how can it be used to do the level measurement?

A dipstick is a rod and it can be used to indicate the liquid level, it is calibrated to do so. A dipstick is simple and cheap and it can be used with any wet materials and it doesn’t have any problem with the density. The dipstick is the easiest way of level measurement, we cannot do closed tank level measurements by dipstick, and also it is used in small tanks so it is not suitable for a wide range of applications. we cannot use the dipstick for high temperature and pressure level measurement.

Working

A dipstick would be lowered into a tank or vessel vertically till it reaches a reference point, we can make use of the tank bottom to make sure that the dipstick is lowered properly. So after the dipstick reaches the correct depth the dipstick can be taken back and the level can be determined by checking where the interface last made contact with the dipstick. So the level measurement can be done by reading the scale on the dipstick, we can mark the scale for point measurement or in units so that continuous measurement can be done. The dipstick can only be used with small tanks. So as shown in the above image dipstick lines are fitted with end weights which are called leads and it will be immersed in the tank.

What are the applications of dipstick?

The major two applications of the dipsticks are it is used to measure the oil level in the internal combustion engines and they are also used to check the fuel quantities in the underground storage tanks.

What are the disadvantages of dipstick?

A dipstick can only be used to measure small tanks, it can only be used if the tank is not pressurized and the tank contents must not be toxic.

What are lead lines and how can we use this instrument to do the level measurement?

The measuring method of the lead lines are similar to the dipstick, it is a steel measuring tape that has a weight attached to it at the bottom and this device can be used in applications where dipsticks can be used. It can be used to measure the oil level.

What are the advantages of lead lines over dipstick?

The lead lines can be rolled up into a smaller or compact unit, so this device is very easy to handle than the dipstick. The major advantage is that it can measure higher levels than the dipstick.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of lead lines?

The lead lines and dipstick have greater accuracy and also the lead lines can be used to measure higher levels. This instrument can only be used to measure the level of the open process system, we must take precautions if the process is toxic to the person. In order to do this measurement, an operator is needed. It is not possible to measure the continuous representation of the process level by the lead lines.

How can we do level measurement by using portable electronic?

By using this level measuring instrument we can measure the level of ullage and oil-water interface. This type of measurement is suitable for open and closed applications. The closed gauging would need the portable electronic gauging in order to use in conjunction with a compatible vapor lock valve. By using portable electronic gauging we can measure the temperature of the tank contents. So with the help of this temperature measurement, we can convert the observed volume to standard volume measurement.
